Tokaji was once one of the most important wines in the world. The wines of the Hungarian region of Tokaj, or as they say it “toe-kay,” are a window into the past. Both Mozart and Haydn coveted this wine along with royals including Peter the Great, King Louis XIC, and Catherine the Great.

Stage Door Pub is a historic, cream-city brick home turned Irish pub on the corner of Franklin and 7th. We provide a quaint, cozy venue in Manitowoc’s first residence. Come join us for a glass of wine, some cocktails or a pint of Guinness.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MSO Classical Era POPS! Candlelight Experience – Music of the Age of Enlightenment Featuring Mozart and Haydn followed by AfterGlow

MANITOWOC, WI, January 23, 2023 – Symphonies are about invention, a realization of the human spirit, and making evident the beauty of which we’re capable. The classical masters Wolfgang “The Whizkid” Mozart and Franz “Papa” Haydn transformed and evolved the symphony with their humor, their profundity, their intellect, and their creativity, proving to us what symphonies are capable of.

On Saturday, February 4th, 2023, the Manitowoc Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Dylan Chmura-Moore, will offer the greatest and most brilliant hits of Mozart & Haydn, two of the most popular musicians of all time. While we consider them “classical” masters today, at the time, they were revolutionizing music and creating beautiful works that are gritty, witty, inventive and passionate. At times their music is rambunctious. At other times it appears divine. At other times it’s disruptive to the monarchy. At other times it’s the most tender and fragile; you dare not breathe.

“We will journey through the beginnings of the symphony (through the eyes of Mozart and Haydn). Symphonies were newfangled things in the early 1700s. Advancing the symphony and turning the medium into the highest form of art is perhaps Mozart and Haydn’s greatest gift,” remarked Music Director Dylan Chmura-Moore. “The MSO will endeavor to take you on a musical journey that unveils a glimmer of Mozart and Haydn’s unique self, revels in their graciousness, and marvels at their enduring creativity.”

Famously, Haydn said to Leopold, Mozart’s father, upon their first meeting: “Your son is the greatest composer I know, either personally or by reputation: he has taste and moreover the greatest possible knowledge of the science of composition.”

Express your love with a date to see the MSO on February 4th at the Capitol Civic Centre. The Classical Era POPS! performance of the Manitowoc Symphony Orchestra will provide a uniquely romantic Valentine’s Day vibe that evokes the original symphonic experience featuring a candlelit stage illuminated by 350+ candles.

Join the MSO immediately following the performance for an AfterGlow reception at the Stage Door Pub (701 Franklin Street) with complimentary hors d’oeuvres prepared and served by Brian’s Smokehouse. MSO will be raffling off a bottle of Mozart’s favorite wine Tokaji. Tokaji wine, from the Hungarian region of Tokaj (“toe-kay”), was once one of the most important wines in the world. Both Mozart and Haydn coveted this wine along with royal customers including Peter the Great, King Louis XIV, and Catherine the Great. Raffle tickets are $5.00 each. In addition, three (3) drink specials – Classical Cosmo; Haydn Highball; Mozart Merlot (or any wine) – will be offered at the cash bar with $1.00 of each specialty drink donated to the MSO.

ABOUT MSO: Manitowoc, Wisconsin is one of the smallest cities to have its own symphony orchestra. The mission of the Manitowoc Symphony Orchestra Association is to promote the highest quality orchestral music experiences available to patrons and musicians. Music’s true power is to move and unite people. Hearing music is about discovering what connects us all—uncovering shared eternal truths. The MSO is currently celebrating its 72nd season.
